History
2008, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) spun off its fab business when it decided to go fabless in 2008.
2009, AMD and the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) — which was part of Mubadala — entered into a joint agreement to start GlobalFoundries in 2009. ATIC purchased Chartered Semiconductor in 2009 and folded it into GlobalFoundries. GlobalFoundries combined AMD’s manufacturing assets in Germany and New York with Chartered Semiconductor’s in Singapore.
2014, ATIC changed its name to Mubadala Technology.
2014, GlobalFoundries acquired on the IBM Foundry. IBM paid GlobalFoundries $1.5B to take it off their hands.
2019, ON Semiconductor and GlobalFoundries entered in an agreement for ON Semiconductor to acquire a 300mm fab located in East Fishkill, New York. ON Semi is expected to gain full operational control at the end of 2022.
