In 1997 Smith joined Actel as VP of software.Smith was previously an independent consultant, specializing in product development and positioning, software team building, pragmatic software engineering practices, and technical team trouble shooting.

Smith spent seven years with Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corp (MCC). He served as vice president of Advanced Systems & Networks, concentrating on contract development programs.

Smith was the founder of VR Information Systems, which was acquired by Tektronix.

Smith holds a Ph.D. and an MSEE from the University of Missouri-Rolla, and a BS in electrical engineering from Wichita State University.
