Established in 1868 when the private College of California merged with the public Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College of Oakland. The college was named in honor of the Anglo-Irish philosopher George Berkeley. UC Davis was spun off from Berkeley in 1905 and by 1920 several other campuses was built to create the University of California System and each obtained autonomy in 1952.
