Patterned LED Substrates

by Mike Watts Patterning in LEDs continues to get plenty of research attention, with no less than 11 papers at Photonics West 2011. This is an interesting example of the challenges of technology and business forecasting. For several years it looked like improving light extraction using a surface photonic crystal would be implemented, but to date the improvement in light extraction has not of... » read more

Photonic Cloaking Devices

by Mike Watts The Romulans are tricky so and so’s, running around cloaked — at least they have to de-cloak to fire (The Romulans are a Star Trek species that use a cloaking device). It turns out the British Army has got a similar idea, and has demonstrated that it can hide a tank using cameras and screens. At Photonics West in January, I saw a presentation that showed the cloaking of ... » read more

HAMRing Imprint or Not

By Mike Watts There were many papers at SPIE Advanced Lithography on Bit Patterned Media (BPM), potentially the way that 1 Tera bit per square inch (1 Tb/in²) hard disk drives will be made in the near future. I think BPM will be the next volume manufacturing application for imprint. Today, roll to roll optical products and wafer level lenses for cell phone cameras are the volume application... » read more

Imprint as the next NGL

By Mike Watts For imprint watchers, SPIE’s Advanced Microlithography in February was very interesting, in that there were several presentations that appeared to be linked, but the presenters denied that there were links ….which makes me think ! Toshiba (Tokyo, Japan) started the ball rolling with a detailed status report on their evaluation of the Molecular Imprints (MII – Austin TX... » read more

Optics Out of Metals at SPIE Photonics West

It was literally and commercially sunny in San Francisco at SPIE Photonics West, held in late January. Lovely weather and an enthusiastic crowd. If you want a large turnout, run a conference in San Francisco in the middle of winter. The conference exhibits took over both major floors of the conference center, and SPIE estimated that nearly 20,000 exhibitors and attendees participated. There ... » read more
