Roel Maes is an R&D Engineering Manager at Synopsys, where he leads the PUF Research and Security team. With his team, he works on the research and development, the specification, and the review of security architectures and solutions for Synopsys PUF IP products and innovations. His technical expertise is focused on physically unclonable functions (PUFs), information and coding theory, cryptography and hardware security, and security architectures in general. Since 2021, he is also a visiting researcher at the Technical University of Eindhoven (TUe). Maes is listed as inventor on 5 patents, has co-authored over 30 papers in high-ranking international security venues, and has published a book on the topic of PUFs. He has served on the editorial boards of the IACR Transactions of Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems (TCHES) and the Journal of Cryptographic Engineering (JCEN), and is a recurring program committee member at security research venues. He holds an MEE (2007) and PhD (2012) degree from University of Leuven (Belgium).
