How to avoid the pitfalls that sometimes can jeopardize overall system performance.
To deliver the demanding performance and faster operation of today’s systems—from communication interfaces to high-image-quality video and multimedia systems—consumer applications employ digital signal processing extensively. Data converters form the interface between the real-world analog signals and the digital domain. They are, therefore, an essential element of the complete signal processing chain which is a part of every consumer device.
While data converters are complex to design, IP vendors can provide system-on-chip (SoC) designers with the appropriate data converter to meet the requirements of virtually any system. Furthermore, to render a data converter suitable for SoC integration, reputed data converter IP vendors such as Synopsys employ sophisticated circuit and architectural techniques to make them robust in the aggressive SoC environment. These circuit and architectural techniques, which are out of the scope of this white paper, yield high immunity from substrate and supply noise typically present in large SoCs, as well as robustness to process, temperature and voltage variations.
Still, to extract the maximum performance that the data converter IP is capable of delivering, SoC designers have to deal with the challenges of integrating the data converter into the SoC and avoiding the pitfalls that can, sometimes, jeopardize overall system performance.
