Convergence in applications has resulted in increasing demands on design complexity and performance. Now what?
Over the past few years, the consumer revolution has generated a significant growth of system-on-a-chip (SoC) designs mainly in the area of consumer electronics. The consumer revolution has led to a trend in convergence of applications on a single device. The biggest such example is the Smartphone or Tablet – handheld devices such as the iPhone or the iPad. These devices can enable consumers with a number of diverse applications such as e-mail, creating office documents, internet browsing, gaming, listening to music, social networking, phone calls, etc.
In order to gain a better foothold, consumer companies are enticing consumers by offering new or better features such as longer battery life, which adds to design complexity. In this competitive food chain, chip design companies are enticing the companies developing these consumer devices with a range of functions embedded in single chip solutions. This convergence in applications has resulted in increasing demands on design complexity and design performance.
