Can HLS Be Trusted?

Semiconductor Engineering sat down with Mike Meredith, solutions architect at Cadence/Forte Design Systems; Mark Warren, Solutions Group director at Cadence; Thomas Bollaert, vice president of application engineering at Calypto; and Devadas Varma, senior director at Xilinx. Part 1 of the discussion looked at the changing market for HLS and the types of customers who are adopting HLS today. Divi... » read more

High Level Synthesis: Significant Differences Remain

In part 1 of this experts series on high-level synthesis (HLS), Semiconductor Engineering sat down with Mike Meredith, vice president of technical marketing at Cadence/Forte Design Systems; Mark Warren, Solutions Group director at Cadence; Thomas Bollaert, vice president of application engineering at Calypto; and Devadas Varma, senior director at Xilinx. The initial part of the discussion looke... » read more

High Level Synthesis Grows Up

When Semiconductor Engineering proposed this Experts At The Table discussion, which was held at the recently concluded DVCon, [getentity id="22032" e_name="Cadence"] had yet to express its intention to purchase [getentity id="22087" e_name="Forte"]. Little did we know that the stakes in the [gettech id="31015" comment="high-level synthesis"] (HLS) arena were being raised so high. Is this an in... » read more

The Week In Review: Design

Synopsys inked a deal to acquire Coverity, a San Francisco-based security startup that builds tools to test source code for defects and security risks, for $375 million. The purchase price is $350 million plus another $25 million in debt. The deal is expected to close in Synopsys’ fiscal Q2. The company announced its financial results for fiscal Q1 ended Jan. 31, as well. Revenue was $479.0 m... » read more

Week In Review: System-Level Design

Cadence agreed to buy Forte Design Systems for an undisclosed sum, adding further proof that the market for high-level synthesis and tools that run at higher levels of abstraction is finally hitting its stride. Behind this acquisition is a rising pain level due to increasing complexity in SoCs—IP integration, low power concerns and much more of everything, from transistors to memories—has f... » read more

Cadence To Buy Forte

Cadence agreed to buy Forte Design Systems for an undisclosed sum, enhancing its footprint in the high-level synthesis market as higher levels of abstraction gain traction across the SoC world. For the better part of a decade high-level synthesis (HLS) has been a market opportunity that was just around the next bend, along with electronic system-level design and SystemC modeling. The Road Ahead For 2014: Tools

In the third and final part of this predictions series we see the natural conclusion of market shifts that are driving changes in semiconductors, and which in turn drive the tools and IP needed to create those systems. To be expected, the changes fall into a few areas: New tools, techniques and changes required for smaller geometries; A migration to higher-levels of abstraction and the... » read more

What Just Happened?

Boy that went by fast. One minute, I’m waking up a little groggy on New Year’s Day, wondering whether the silicon industry is ever going to rebound. The next minute, it’s today and the industry had a good year, and is, in many ways, a completely different animal than it was 12 months ago. Innovation is evolutionary, sure. But if you really think about 2013, you can make an argument tha... » read more

Will History Repeat Itself?

Hands up — how many people read the books by Clayton Christensen, books such as The Innovator’s Dilemma? His books were talked about endlessly in the corridors of the EDA companies when they first came out. They all wanted to identify the next disruption and could find reasons why almost every new tool was going to be disruptive. For people not familiar with his work, his main premise wa... » read more
