Week 23: ICCAD, The Kaufman Award And The DAC Exhibitor Meeting

It was another week of travel though this time I stayed on schedule – no missed flights! I was in San Jose for several days during which I briefly crossed paths with two EDA stars. Their work suggests that the present and future of our industry is in good shape. And I was there to host a meeting for those exhibiting at DAC, which, if you’ll excuse the pun, will be an even better place to sh... » read more

The Week In Review: Design

Tools Mentor Graphics rolled out an extension to its PCB design platform that allows for synchronization of processes across multi-board systems. The new tool captures logic and system definitions for boards, cables, backplanes, cable assemblies, sensors and actuators. Who Owns DAC?

In June I was chatting with an editor unfamiliar with DAC and he was wondering who owns the conference. It’s a fair question and I recall thinking I’d blog about it as part of my effort to boost understanding of DAC. After all, my goal is to let you glimpse behind the curtain and that means touching on the prosaic though very important issue of ownership. First, the basics. DAC is owne... » read more

EDA Shows Continued Growth

EDA and IP revenue jumped 3.8% in Q2 to $1.65 billion, up from $1.59 billion in the same period in 2013, spurred by the need for new tools to design, create and verify SoCs using 16/14nm finFETs. Sequentially, the numbers reported by the EDA Consortium were down slightly from Q1, but the four-quarter moving average—considered a more reliable number because tools sales are long-term investm... » read more
