Supply Chain Resilience And Agility: Two Critical Sides Of The Same Coin

Over the past three years of major global disruptions, the supply chains of many industries have sharpened their focus on resilience. Today, discussions on electronics industry resilience center on redundancy across suppliers, multi-tier supplier mapping, nearshoring, reducing the number of unique parts, regionalizing supply chains, and business continuity planning. Resilience connotes a st... » read more

Experts at the Table: Semiconductor Engineering sat down to talk about how to verify that a semiconductor design will be secure, with Mike Borza, Synopsys scientist; John Hallman, product manager for trust and security at Siemens EDA; Pete Hardee, group director for product management at Cadence; Paul Karazuba, vice president of marketing at Expedera; and Dave Kelf, CEO of Breker Verification. ... » read more

Week In Review: Manufacturing, Test

TEL announced plans to build a ¥2.2 billion ($168.2 million) production and logistics center at its Tohoku Office to increase capacity. Construction of the 57,000m² facility, which will be used for manufacturing thermal processing and single-wafer deposition systems, is slated to start in spring 2024, and expected to be completed in fall 2025. Toshiba's board voted in favor of a 2 trillio... » read more

Like Wayne Gretzky, EDA Aims To Be Where The Puck Is Going, Not Where It Has Been

When I launched this blog series, I set out to share some of the more unique industry transitions I’ve witnessed over my 20+ year career in EDA. The B2B sales process has not been immune to change and transition. In fact, you could create a college curriculum with a daunting syllabus on the major transitions that have impacted the B2B sales process. I won’t drop that on you. The room wh... » read more

EDA, IP Growth Surges Again

EDA tools and IP revenue increased 8.9% in Q3 of 2022 to $3.767 billion, up from $3.458 billion in 2021, according to a just-released report from the ESD Alliance at SEMI. All regions except Japan reported growth, but the numbers were a bit more uneven in Q3 than in recent quarters. For example, total silicon IP dropped 1%, while services revenue grew 20.8%. At the same time, EDA revenue jum... » read more

Collaboration Widens Among Big Chip Companies

Experts at the Table: Semiconductor Engineering sat down to discuss the growing need for collaboration among equipment and tools vendors, the impact of systems companies and increases in complexity, and how to handle a push for more customization while controlling costs, with Martin van den Brink, president and CTO of ASML; Luc Van den Hove, CEO of imec; David Fried, vice president of computati... » read more

An OSAT Perspective On Semiconductor Market Trends

For the semiconductor industry, 2022 was a very interesting year. On one hand, it witnessed shortages in the supply chain. On the other hand, the macro-economic situation turned and demand for several consumer and computing devices plummeted. A trade war with China and ensuing localization of supply chain with passage of CHIPS act took shape in 2022. The auto industry is still recovering from t... » read more

Supply Chain Collaboration Key To Making Chip Industry More Sustainable

Coming in the wake of the COP27, the Smart and Green Manufacturing Summit at SEMICON Europa 2022 (Munich, 15-17 November) had a timely focus on the semiconductor industry’s contribution to meeting the United Nations’ target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. However, in an industry as large and valuable as semiconductors, social as well as environmental imp... » read more

The Politics Of Standards

Standards often are seen as an industry coming together to agree upon a common solution to a common problem, but there are times when this could not be further from the truth. Having been involved in standards at all levels — from participant to chair for several standards — some were successful, some were not, some are seeing significant adoption while others are withering by the wayside, ... » read more

Being A Design Verification Engineer Is Fun And Rewarding

Philippe Luc, director of verification at Codasip, talked to students of the UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF) about what it is like to be a verification engineer. On one hand the UKESF encourages young people to study electronics and pursue careers in this sector, and on the other hand Codasip is very keen to help prepare the engineers who will solve tomorrow’s technology chall... » read more
