How to select the topologies using WBG devices in bidirectional power conversion.
The paper provides an overview of the topology for bidirectional converters and discusses their different usage. Bidirectional energy flow applications are usually found in energy storage systems, battery systems, and can be categorized as grid-connected and DC-DC-connected. In grid-connected applications, two power conversion stages, which are power factor corrector (PFC) rectifier/inverter and isolated bidirectional DC-DC converter, are utilized. For DC-DC-connected applications, an isolated bidirectional DC-DC converter is selected to achieve galvanic isolation and a high voltage-conversion ratio. Since the battery is a variable voltage source based on the stored energy level, a wide range of voltage in charging and discharging operations are expected at the DC-DC converter. A broad, comprehensive study, and a complete assessment have been done in this paper to select suitable converters in different applications, such as rectiverter, DC wallbox, and energy storage. A detailed summary using wide bandgap devices of each converter is explained with the merits, drawbacks, power densities, features, and efficiencies.
